New carriageway, cycle lane and pedestrian routes We are awaiting an imminent decision by Surrey County Council to redevelop the Burpham section of the London Rd to have safer pavement-based cycle lanes and a renewal of the carriageway for vehicles. A large meeting of residents expressed reservations about:
Safety at the ‘pinch points’ of the new road (e.g. by the chapel)
Disruption during rebuilding, especially to commuters and local shops
Whether ‘floating bus stops’ are safe if passengers have to cross the cycle lane to get to the pedestrian pathway
Cyclists consider the current cycleway too narrow and motorists are often incautious at the roundabouts. A safer lay out might improve the numbers travelling by foot, bike and bus. An additional issue for parents is that their children can get to school by a safe route. The Dutch roundabout Related to this development is a Dutch roundabout planned for the Clockhouse Roundabout junction. The council may consider an adapted version of the cycle-friendly roundabout that is safe for both pedestrians and cyclists and agreeable to motorists. The main concerns people have had are:
Safety issues when it is first introduced, if people are not well-briefed about how it works
Significant traffic disruption whilst the roundabout is rebuilt
